    Professor Alok Kumar Singh is an acclaimed academic with an impressive educational background. He holds a bachelor's degree with honors and a master's degree in Geology, specializing in Sedimentology. He earned his Ph D in Geology with a specialization in Coal Geology and Coal & Organic Petrology from the prestigious Institute of Science at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi.

    After completing his Ph D, Professor Singh was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship from the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India) to work on different aspects of Indian coals. He continued his academic pursuits with zeal and worked in the industry as a senior scientist with the Research & Development Division of Tata Steel Ltd for over eight years.

    Professor Singh's illustrious academic career began in 2010 when he joined the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology. He has made outstanding contributions to his field of study and has received numerous accolades for his research work. Prof. Singh has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD by the Indian Science Congress Association, the KHARE AWARD by the Indian Institute of Mineral Engineer's, SUBRATO GHOSH COAL PETROLOGY AWARD 2015-2016 by The Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Institute of India, and H S PAREEK AWARD by the Geological Society of India. In addition, he has received several best paper awards at various conferences.

    Professor A K Singh is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Committee for Coal & Organic Petrology, Coal Petrological Society of India, Geological, Mining, and Metallurgical Society of India, Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers, Geosciences Foundation, Indian Science Congress, Society of Petroleum Engineer, and European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE). He holds several responsibilities in these professional organizations and is actively involved in advancing the field of Geology, especially Coal & Organic Petrology, and Geochemistry.

    Professor Alok Kumar Singh is a distinguished academic and research leader at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Jais, Amethi, where he serves as a Professor in the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Geo-Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the Institute of Science, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), with a specialization in Coal Geology and Organic Petrology. His academic trajectory includes a prestigious post-doctoral fellowship from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), focusing on the characterization and utilization of Indian coals.

    Prior to joining RGIPT in 2010, Professor Singh gained over eight years of industrial R&D experience as a Senior Scientist in the Research and Development Division of Tata Steel Ltd. His transition from industry to academia was marked by a strong commitment to bridging practical field applications with academic pedagogy and research innovation.

    At RGIPT, Professor Singh has been instrumental in curriculum development and has taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Sedimentology, Structural Geology, Petroleum Geology, Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources, Organic Petrology, and Basin Analysis. His pedagogical contributions have significantly enriched the institute's academic framework.

    His research interests are rooted in Coal and Organic Petrology, Geochemistry, and Hydrocarbon Source Rock Evaluation. A leading expert in his domain, Professor Singh has supervised several Ph.D. scholars and authored numerous high-impact publications in national and international journals. His work is widely cited and has contributed substantially to the scientific understanding of coal-based energy resources. He is a full member of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology (ICCP) and is recognized as one of India's foremost coal and organic petrologists.

    Professor Singh's contributions have earned him several prestigious accolades, including the Young Scientist Award from the Indian Science Congress Association, the Khare Award from the Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers, the Subrato Ghosh Coal Petrology Award from the Mining, Geological, and Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) and H S Pareek Award from Geological Society of India.

    His affiliations with professional bodies such as the Geological Society of India and ICCP reflect his active engagement with the global scientific community.

    In addition to his academic and research accomplishments, Professor Singh has held several key administrative positions at RGIPT. These include- Officiating Director (July 2024 – April 2025), Dean of Non-Teaching Staff and Administration, Dean of Student Affairs, Head of the Department of Petroleum Engineering, and Chief Warden of RGIPT Hostels. In each of these roles, he has demonstrated visionary leadership and a strategic approach to institutional growth, faculty development, and student welfare.

    Professor Singh is deeply committed to interdisciplinary research, sustainable energy education, and industry-academia collaboration. He consistently promotes innovation in teaching methodologies, research excellence, and environmentally responsible exploration practices. His unique blend of industrial insight, academic rigor, and administrative leadership makes him a vital contributor to India's evolving energy education and research landscape.

    About: Kaushal is currently working as a Research Scholar at the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Geo-Engineering, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology. He has completed his graduation from BSNV PG College (Lucknow University) and post-graduation from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi.

    Thesis: Petrological and Geochemical Characterization of Sohagpur Coalfield, India.

    Synopsys: The objective is to perform a petrographic and geochemical analysis of coal deposits in the Sohagpur Area. This includes determining the coalification trend over time and space and deciphering the paleo-depositional conditions. These characteristics will also be helpful for gas adsorption behaviour with Enhanced-Coal Bed Methane recovery. The findings will recommend the most favourable use of coal in industrial utilization.

    Research Interest: Coal petrology, Hydrocarbon source rock potential, CBM, and CCUS.

    Achievements: Kaushal has published over eight research papers in various SCI journals and has presented his findings at prestigious conferences. He is a recipient of the Creative Research Poster Award from the Indian Association of Sedimentologists, awarded during its 40th convention held at the Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleosciences. Additionally, he qualified the prestigious exams like IIT JAM and GATE several times.

    Synopsys: Geochemical and petrographical characterization of coal deposits of Bokaro basin to decipher the paleo depositional condition and predict for the appropriate utilization of these coals.

    Research Interest: Coal petrology, basin analysis, hydrocarbon source rock potential, CBM, seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation, velocity modeling, static modeling of basins using multiple datasets of different domains, hydrocarbon reservoir characterization, spectroscopy, environmental geology, and social geology.

    Achievements: Manish completed his post-graduation from IIT Roorkee and got placed in Schlumberger. After 10+ years of industry experience, he moved back into academia. He has also qualified for GATE with AIR-53. Manish has published seven research papers so far in various SCI journals and has presented his findings at prestigious conferences.

    Rare Earth Elements (REEs), including 17 metals like lanthanides, La, Sc, and Y, are vital for advanced technologies such as LEDs, HDDs, medical devices, and high-strength magnets.

    Despite their importance, REEs are sparsely distributed globally, prompting interest in coal ash as an alternative resource.

    Technologies like Ti-sorbent chromatography and electrodialytic treatment have proven effective for extracting key REEs like Dy, Nd, and Pr.REEs are also extracted using synthetic chemisorbents and natural biosorbents through hydrometallurgical processes involving acid leaching and selective adsorption. Silica-based and nanomaterial adsorbents enhance extraction efficiency, but acid overuse poses environmental risks. Eco-friendly alternatives involve algae, bacterial proteins, and ionic liquids, though these methods can be costly or slow. Roasting and ultrasonication improve leaching, while magnetic, gravity, and flotation separations minimize the chemical load. Batch extraction systems are inefficient; lab advancements have achieved up to 99% recovery from coal ash.

    Future efforts must prioritize sustainable, low-acid methods and improve adsorption capacity for scalable REE extraction. This will foster REE self-sufficiency and reduce geopolitical reliance on imports.

    Thesis: Assessment of Tertiary Shales of Northeastern India for Source Rock Potential, Paleoenvironmental and Paleo-depositional Reconstruction

    Synopsys: The demand for unconventional hydrocarbons in different industries, particularly in the chemical and energy sectors, increases day by day. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the production of natural gas in 2018-19 was 90.1 million standard cubic meters per day, but the demand for natural gas between 2023- 2030 is expected to grow by nearly 60%. So, the objective is to perform a petrographic, geochemical, and organic geochemical analysis on shale deposits of the Northeastern area of India to identify the unconventional plays. This includes determining the hydrocarbon potential, paleo-depositional, and paleo-environmental conditions.

    Significance of Research and its Impact: The outcomes of research will have significant implications for environmental and green energy demand. This research can provide valuable insights into India's current problems because the proposed research, "Assessment of Tertiary Shales of Northeastern India for Source Rock Potential, Paleoenvironmental and Paleo-depositional Reconstruction Using Modern Multi-Analytical Geochemical Tools," will give information about new unconventional hydrocarbon play within the Assam-Arakan Basin. This research also aims to address past climatic conditions through paleo-environmental and paleo-depositional studies. In the context of global challenges such as climate change, this work is not only timely but also essential for better understanding on the paleo-environmental and paleo-depositional evolution of the Tertiary sequences and predicting future climatic conditions via investigating the Tertiary period from the Assam-Arakan Basin. The findings will recommend the most favorable use in industrial utilization.

    Achievements: Gyan Prakash Tripathi completed his bachelor's degree (2016-2019) in Geology, Physics, and Mathematics from the University of Lucknow with Geology and Physics as a major subject. After that, he received a master's degree (2019-2021) in Geology from Bundelkhand University, Jhansi, India, with a gold medal assigned by the department. During his master's degree, he received a scholarship award for two years from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) as a meritorious student. His master's thesis, titled "Morphometric Analysis of KEN Basin using Advanced Techniques of ArcGIS and Remote Sensing," focused on morphometric proxies and allowed him to develop important research skills, including data analysis, lab work, field research, and software knowledge. Based on these findings, a research article, "Morphometric and morphotectonic attributes of Ken basin, central India: Depicting status of soil erosion, and tectonic activities," was published in the journal "Total Environment Advances." Furthermore, he received a fellowship from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), India, as an Inspire Fellow (2022-2023) during my tenure as a research scholar at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, Odisha, India. He also qualified for IIT-JAM 2019 and 2020 (Geology) and GATE-2021 (Geology and Geophysics).
