Research Laboratories

Polymeric Materials and Nano Catalysis

In this laboratory, the research work is focused on the development of functional polymeric material along with nano-based polymer composites and heterogeneous catalysts. These materials are useful as electrocatalysts helping young chemical engineers to develop catalytic technologies having prime applications in Oil and Gas sector, especially in the downstream industry. The laboratory also has many high-tech pieces of equipment such as Glovebox, muffle furnace, DBC, FT IR, DMR, UTM, ultra-low temperature bath, Autoclave and a split furnace.

Electrocatalysis

The prime focus of this laboratory is centered on the development of Electro-Spun based material, flow battery and electrocatalysts with the help of potentiostat and cyclic voltammetry and analyzing the physical properties of the different materials helping students to study different materials and their properties.

Geo-Science

In Geo-Science Laboratory, rocks and minerals like- Opal white, Gypsum, Feldspar, Galena cubes, Stibnite, Apatite, Limonite and Biotite are available and students use these rocks to identify their physical and optical properties. It helps students to develop basic concepts for determining the existence of petroleum products in that rock bed.

High-Performance Computing (HPC)

The facilities available in this laboratory are used for the simulation of mathematical, physical and engineering problems. The main areas of applications are numerical reservoir simulation, multiphase flows, flow through porous media, simulation of molecular dynamics, seismic wave propagation and forced/natural convection-dominated flows. The HPC cluster has nine (one master and eight compute) nodes (Fujitsu PR3000) and each node has a dual processor with 20 cores/processor (with total of 180 cores). The HPC cluster also has software like Gaussian and Tec360.

Exploration and Prospecting

An exploration and prospecting laboratory has been established with state-of-the-art technologies. There are 13 workstations in the laboratory with a dual monitor setup and a projection system. The Dell T7500 workstation is fitted with Xeon Processor, 24 GB RAM, and graphics card with 6 GB memory. The large size of memory helps in better visualization of 3D seismic datasets. KINGDOM and OpendTect software is being used for teaching seismic data analysis for reservoir characterization.

Bio-Nano Interface

The theme of the Bio-Nano laboratory is to synthesize bio-directed nanostructures for energy conversion, catalytic and biomedical applications. The focus of this laboratory is to investigate the properties of nanostructures, at first, ensemble level and thereafter, molecular level using state-of-the-art microscopic methods. A great emphasis has also been placed on the engineering of dimensionality and tunability of emission properties of nanostructures. The development of LED and Solar Cells is the major goal.

Heat Engine and Heat Transfer

The laboratory is equipped with a vast array of both organic and inorganic compounds, Muffle furnace, Digital Oven, Magnetic Agitators, Water Pumps, Liquid Coolers, Water Purification system and various other high-end technical equipment. Mainly the research work in the lab is focused around Polymeric Gel synthesis, Organic Corrosion Inhibitor Synthesis, Heterogeneous Catalysis, Nano Material Gels, Natural Chemical Extracts from Plants and Water Purification Systems.

Alternate Energy

This lab has been established to teach students about alternate sources of energy. The prime objective is to implement the optimal solar power system and develop educational environment in the field of non-conventional energy based on solar power. The lab is well equipped with instruments like Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Data Acquisition Unit and other relevant apparatus.

Unit Operation

The unit operation laboratory combines the theoretical and practical chemical engineering practices. This lab creates an atmosphere of miniaturized chemical processes where the students learn the concept of chemical processes being composed of a variety of unit operations. The offered exercises include: Liquid flow in pipes and measuring major and minor losses, centrifugal pump systems, flow in packed columns and fluidized columns, rotary drum filtration, flow control trainer, continuous and batch distillation, absorption in packed columns, plate heat exchanging, liquid and liquid extraction temperature and pressure processes and process control trainer, two-phase flow in packed bed, Dropwise and film wise condensation.

Drilling Fluid and Cementation

This laboratory has been developed for the testing of properties of drilling fluid (Mud) to be used for circulation in the bore well. In this lab, equipment like- Multi-speed VG viscometer (6 speeds and 12 speeds), Fitter press, Mud balance, pH meters, HPHT Viscometer, Sand content measuring tube, Marsh funnel viscometer, HP Viscometer, HPHT Filter Press, Atmospheric Consistometer, Roller oven with 8 aging cells are available to practice.

Petroleum Product Testing

It is equipped with conventional and modern equipments such as Abel's testing equipment, Cloud and pour point, Redwood viscometer and Copper strip corrosion test apparatus.

Green Separation

Green separation laboratory helps Chemical engineering students to understand the processes, which reduce the harmful gaseous emission from the industry. With the understanding of chemical engineering being applied, students here develop green (eco-friendly) separation technologies to capture CO2 from large point sources. This contemplates advanced separation processes coupled with Process modeling, simulation and optimization.

Geoinformatics Engineering

This laboratory is equipped with conventional and modern surveying equipment such as tape, auto level, total station, GPS and DGPS. Students are exposed to the state-of-the-art techniques of the use of surveying data for application in Petroleum Engineering.
